Dolores Street School is located in the very diverse city of Carson, California. Serving the finest students on the planet, we are a vibrant environment that is steeped in tradition and community spirit. Many of our wonderful parents attended school here and six of our great teachers were students at Dolores Street. We trust that this website will be beneficial to the entire community!

¿QUE PASA?
ARMANDO ARZATE TRIBUTE - Our dear friend and Dolores Street parent and supporter, Mr. Armando Arzate, passed away on August 27, 2009. We posted a tribute in his honor that will remain in place this school year. If you would like to express your thoughts about Mr. Arzate, please contact Ms. Kendrick or Mrs. Ross.

CATALINA ISLAND MARINE INSTITUTE - Dolores Street’s 5th-Grade will take its annual trip to Catalina Island for three days starting Monday, May 17th. CIMI at Toyon Bay provides a unique, exciting program that's the perfect way to enhance any student's education! The program focuses on hands-on, experiential science education.  Utilizing a state-of-the-art labs and equipment, expert instructors, and the beautiful natural land and sea environments of Catalina Island, efforts are made to increase science literacy, stimulate minds and, most importantly, to create excitement about science. Comprehensive information is on the CIMI webpage:

DOLORES STREET DEMOGRAPHICS - Current school demographics from the Los Angeles Unified School District are located on this official webpage:

EARTHQUAKE SAFETY - The severe tragedies in Haiti, Chile, and Turkey have prompted many Californians to reevaluate our own preparations. A page has been added that focuses on earthquake safety. All students should know what to do at school and at home. The page also includes additional earthquake-related information:

MYLAR BALLOONS - Mylar balloons are popular gifts of recognition and are sometimes seen at the P. R. I. D. E. award assemblies and the 5th-Grade culmination ceremony. These foil balloons are not biodegradable and can be a hazard to the environment. Because they conduct electricity and may drift into power lines, causing short circuits that could eventually lead to a power outage, Mylar balloons should never be released outdoors.. Such was the case here at Dolores Street several years ago. A Mylar balloon was accidentally released near the North Yard and became tangled with the nearby power lines, resulting in a long and costly repair.

SCHOOL DAY - The school day starts at 8:05am.

SCHOOL WEBSITES - This Dolores Street website is worked on and maintained by one of the teachers. Plans are to have participation from some of the students in the Technology Club as well as students in the G. A. T. E. program. Some work by students has already taken place, including the lovely little voice welcoming visitors to the website. Numerous pages that may eventually become part of this site have been worked on... some are completely finished.

A separate Dolores Street website is maintained by one of our parents and contains an extensive amount of pertinent school information. Please check it out:

TEACHER VOLUNTEERS - Thank you to our daily teacher volunteers, Ms. Kendrick and Mrs. Ross. After giving almost eighty combined years of classroom service, these two retired teachers continue to be involved!

TEACHER WEBPAGES - A number of organizations, such as Scholastic, offer free webpages for teachers. Mrs. Coloma Tsao has hers posted below... click anywhere on the webpage picture to gain access. She will probably assist you if are serious about starting a great Scholastic page like hers.

Our Dolores Street Multicultural Dancers were invited to the Carson Community Center to entertain for the Star View Children’s Foundation’s Christmas party on Tuesday, December 22. The dancers performed selections from Hawaii and Samoa and used their implements, ipu, puili, and fans, to liven up their presentation.  Since children all around the world wait for Santa and his reindeer, the group ended the show with the Holiday Program’s hit, “Blitzen.” Their steps, smiles, and singing were greeted with joyous applause from the Star View guests and the dancers’ families. The dancers would like to thank Star View for their invitation and also send love and thanks to all the families for their support.  What a wonderful way to end their 2009 season!

Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day...a great success! I was so glad to see so many parents (more than 220), retired teachers, and former teachers come out and show their support to our school. Thank you to all of you who helped me make this event a fun and memorable one... and to those who put up with me as I went all crazy trying to make it happen. I couldn't have done it without my wonderful DSS family!
